Block Facebook, but not messenger.com #433

How to block the facebook.com website, but not messenger.com? So it is still possible to use messenger, but surfing the timeline isn't possible? What needs to be blocked?

You'r right, it's technically not a issue with self control. But still, it's related and there might be people looking for that issue related to SelfControl.

Block http://facebook.com Use http://messenger.com

@Curting, it doesn't work.

Just to clarify, this is definitely a bug and hasn't been fixed. Adding facebook.com to the blocklist automatically blocks messenger.com, even if the latter is not in the blocklist. Messenger.com gives the same "site can't be reached" error as sites on your blocklist. Could someone please look into this?

If anyone's noticed any other sites that get blocked without being on the blocklist, leaving a comment below may help developers track down the bug.

Hi @drpaulralph, this is an expected result of how the block works right now. We block the servers by IP address in addition to by hostname. There are almost certainly some shared servers between Facebook and Messenger, so blocking one will probably block the other.

It's definitely not desired behavior, but this one won't change unless the blocking engine is entirely rewritten with a proxy-based approach (which, given the current pace of development, isn't happening in the foreseeable future).
