X website is blocked, even though it's NOT on my blocklist #681

This is a meta-issue to contain all of the cases where a specific website or service is blocked, but it shouldn't be (it's not on your blocklist). Please add all such problems as comments on this issue, instead of creating new bug reports for each website.

Debugging Steps Before Adding a Site To This List

  1. Make sure you're on the latest version of SelfControl
  2. Make sure the block is actually running (you open SelfControl and it shows a timer). Otherwise, this is likely an issue unrelated to SelfControl
  3. Make sure the requested site isn't actually on your blocklist (click "View Blocklist" to make sure it's not there)
  4. Clear your browser cache, then restart your browser
  5. Ensure the site is accessible from another device (e.g. your phone), to make sure it's not just a problem with that website or with your internet connection
  6. If the site still isn't accessible from your Mac but is accessible from another device, add it to this list

Summary (i.e. your situation)

Blocks generally work for me (websites are blocked properly), but this one specific website or service is blocked despite it not being on my blocklist. I'm on the latest version of SelfControl, double-checked that the site is not on my blocklist, have checked that the site is accessible from other devices and have already tried clearing my browser cache. I've run multiple blocks and this behavior is consistent.

  1. Search this page (Cmd-F) to see if the website is already on this list. If so, react to that comment with a thumbs-up, instead of adding a new comment.

I've noticed that when I unblock Instagram it still remains blocked on both Chrome and Safari when I run a new block. Any ideas of how to resolve this?

How long have you noticed this issue? Since downloading and using SelfControl over a year ago. The issue with this website is not intermittent. I have never been able to block this website while always being able to successfully block all others.

Just a small number of domains like Reuters, NYTimes, Twitter, etc none of which are CDNs or have any obvious relationship to Paypal or its related businesses

How long have you noticed this issue?

It's been happening for years

https://paypal.com loads but https://www.paypalobjects.com is blocked. The latter domain hosts all external assets (JS/CSS/etc) for the former, so the Paypal site is functionally broken. This is particularly problematic for me because I block the news sites to focus on work, which includes shipping orders received via Paypal.

I also clicked through the list of sites which other people reported above. I could access all of those, even with SelfControl running, with the sole exception of http://ocw.mit.edu

I have set a block for 90 days, I think putting tv.apple.com in the list is not letting load content in the apple music app on macos, I am able to use the apple music app on iphone.

If I turn on my VPN while running a SelfControl block, I am able to visit svelte.dev, though sites that are on my blocklist remain unavailable.

What I discovered is that rebooting after starting the timer is the only thing that consistently helps remove collateral blocks. This method worked for me when I couldn't open most of the sites mentioned in other comments. After rebooting, all sites loaded successfully, except for those on the blocklist.

I suggest trying to reboot after starting the timer.

I can access pythonhosted.org but not files.pythonhosted.org! I mostly need to access this from my command line when I run pip install a_package_name.

Both bun.sh (not on the blacklist) and vas3k.ru (on the blacklist) resolve to 188.114.96.7 188.114.97.7. These IP addresses belong to Cloudflare.

I have checked that packets to them are not routed, and DNS does not play a role:

Hi I really like this software and i know its free and great! Any way we can debug what's happening here? I am also not able to access pythonhosted.org. Pretty much a dealbreaker since I cannot install python packages.

I did try somethings with macosx log show --predicate 'subsystem == "com.apple.network"' --info --last 1m on my mac but the damn lP addresses hashed due to some security constraints on that command

Workplace is Facebook's enterprise solution. Though it's the same company, the products are different, but I can imagine how that might be hard to handle. 🤔
