Appending a string into a emptied UniTable fails #12

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Empty a unitable
2. Appending with a character column alone will always fail.
3. Appending with aditional columns will only fail the first time and 
subsequent appends will work.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

See attached file for a session demonstrating the problem.
