Locking and reworked parts #31

Made some changes to improve things for me. I think some of them might be of general interest. These changes also address #10, #17, #21 and #23.

I'm sorry I didn't have the time to incorporate these changes sooner. Many have been added, but some I dismissed for the purpose of trying to keep the code shorter and more readable. Thank you greatly for all of your contributions.
