For me this was an issue with the Nvidia driver selection. I have subsequently corrected the settings and now they work.
@timoakker generally on Linux when it borks you can still access a TTY via ctrl+alt+F2 (might need to hold fn as well)
Then after logging in you can run the reboot-in-desktop command provided by this, and then try to fix things inside Ubuntu before trying again.
I had just installed Ubuntu and Steam. Then I ran your script. When I boot the PC now, it gets stuck on a black screen. I don't know how to access the desktop or if I even can. Since there's just a black screen, I can't say where the problem is. My Ubuntu was up to date.
