Since EmulationStation 2.8.1RP I've noticed the pid is now back to 'emulationstation' otherwise the music isn't muting correctly.

This seems to be related to Linux rather than EmulationStation. Can you doublecheck the contents of /proc/*/comm is not truncated to 15 characters on your system? Also, what Linux version are you running? And: to make this backwards compatible, please change it so the name is truncated to 15 bytes in the script. It is broken now for RetroPie 4.5.1
