Project Wizard: Search on Homepage #783

Selling Search consists of two parts

  1. Market "search that returns video" as opposed to (youtube) "search that returns web pages" on SEO pages
  2. Present the same search marketing and functionality on shelby.tv

The idea is not to define Shelby, but to put more weight behind our current search productization experiment.

WHO AND WHY This is for normals; in particular those who see our SEO pages. If they perform a search from there and enjoy it, they currently have no easy way do so again. We should make it easy for them to run another search at a later time just by visiting shelby.tv

WHAT AND HOW Search is already presented on SEO pages. It needs to be augmented with new marketing message (or two that would be A/B tested on the SEO page). A similar search w/ marketing section would need to be added to shelby.tv landing page (results of AB test to update which message is on landing page).

The logged-out shelby UX which is shown after performing one of these searches should be simplified.

  1. Instead of showing all of our buttons on the video cards (which is found confusing by some actual users) we should show just one (preferably "queue" b/c we will expose users via that mechanism and make shelby feel like a lively community). The choice becomes binary (should i click it or not?) instead of daunting which (1) cleans up UI and (2) hopefully increases retention and sign ups (user will still have to sign up to perform their desired action).
  2. The app header should hide "queue" and "me" to clean that up.

The "request an invite" copy should also be changed to "sign up" everywhere (same functionality). Ideally we would A/B test the two.

BUILD IT NOTES Matyus + 1 could have this done (design and implementation) in a single day.

LAUNCH Would not need fanfare, just test and deploy.

ANALYZE KISS should track searches performed on shelby.tv landing page. GA will track conversion of SEO search marketing message. A/B test may choose better SEO search marketing message which should then be updated at shelby.tv.

Success of logged out UX simplification will be judged by sign up rate.

1 - Now (per PP review 1/4/13)

Notes

New home page is being designed with the idea that it will probably features a BFSB (Big Fucking Search Box) prominently. But we should have a BFSB on our current home page before the retreat next week. Will be able to collect data on usage that may inform design of new home page.

Next Steps

  1. @vincentiadevaia is working on design that re-uses current elements to work BFSB into current home page. Will have first round reviewed by EOD today (1/4/13)
  2. If not settled today, we will settle on a design by EOD Monday (1/7/13)
  3. By Wednesday (1/9/13) get this built and deployed to production

i just moved the signup form into the genius square, since genius is no longer in the app store

when you guys implement the search, feel free to clean my stuff up if you think it needs it, but don't go crazy; let's crank this stuff out quick since we're replacing it with a new homepage soon

Search on homepage implemented and deployed. A/B test in progress for the two different marketing messages but it looks highly likely that there's no significant difference in getting people to search.

Removing some of the buttons in the logged out experience to test for better conversion is a separate task and one that needs more thought to be done usefully - ie what is a conversion? It really isn't within the scope of this project specifically.

Can't make the modifications in regards to requesting an invite/signing up in app because this functionality was removed in favor of the "Learn More" button.

So, I'd say we're done, and PS we were done on time/early even though I'm just marking it closed now.
