This is not a bug.

The developer purposely did this to mask the length of the password. Similarly, password with length more than 7 will be masked to be 7* too. This is a privacy feature. The point of masking is to minimise the information provided seen on the terminal. If users wanted to check their input they could just scroll up OR view this password to double check.
