Please let me know about general feedback, ideas, proposals, and opinions.

Since a logo is very much about personal preference too, I can't promise to take every suggestion into account. Rest assured though that I do appreciate your feedback, even if I may not necessarily end up putting it into practise.

How about simple classics plus letters: rect3597

Oh, that's a pretty nice idea actually. I'll see what I can do with it!

Why not something that invokes the name: steel and bank?

Shinmera commented 7 years ago

I've had that idea too and a couple of people suggested it. The problem is that they both are metaphors that are already strongly associated with things that have no connection to what SBCL actually is. Steel alludes to metal work, process engineering, raw materials. Bank alludes to banking, money, security. These connections would only confuse and mislead.

Part of the trouble is that what SBCL actuall is, is very difficult to make tangible. Concepts and ideas such as Lisp, stability, maturity, efficiency, speed, all do not lend themselves well to imagery, let alone one that is easy to simplify and reduce.

This is why for the most part I've been focusing on abstract concepts that have mostly no attachment to much of anything else; it avoids the confusion other concepts that relate to the name would bring.

Logo design is tough because it requires something that is unique, very simplistic, distinguishable at small sizes, immediately recognisable, and aesthetically pleasing. These are all constraints that massively reduce the amount of "explanatory power" you have available to you, and thus make it close to impossible to do anything that is complicated or intricate.

The four colored squares is very Microsoft-ish. I also have no idea where the snake comes from; it's even more confusing because there's already a language called Python.

The grey parens gives me an idea: a pair of steel parens, perhaps with diamond plate texture?

Shinmera commented 7 years ago

The coloured squares are from the original get banner.

The snake logos are just called python because the compiler in SBCL is called python and I needed a way for people to be able to refer to each logo. It'll look like a snake to anyone seeing the logo outside of that logo page, and I think they are well different enough from the Python-language logo to not cause that confusion.

I'd rather avoid any kind of texturing.

Lettering is my favourite, its an evolution on the current logo, and less bitsy than Lettering Cutout. Or maybe a steel plane banking hard!

dlowe-net commented 7 years ago

Seems like the parens and snake circle could be combined.

zakovyrya commented 7 years ago

Spiral and Snake Square are great! @dlowe-net combining them would make it look busy IMO

I'm in favour of something that contains the letters. I think Lettering looks very nice. Lettering Cutout and Thin Lettering are too difficult to read for my taste (the S and the B are alright but the C and L are not).

How about a mixture? "Parens" + "Lettering", have the Parenthesis protect the SB CL letters.
