The legacy irc meetings that the project has hosted have ceased to be scheduled this year. The tradition was kept alive as long as it could be, however poor attendance, moderation issues, personal attacks, and people not wanting to use irc have left us with the question of how to keep a community meeting feasible.
In 2020, I set up a Discord server. This was done for several reasons. In the past personal attacks were sustained not just against me, but others. IMO, irc was not a productive place and there was too much focus on personal things and politics rather than productive or professional work. It was also not a welcoming place for non devs, with community members being openly hostile, belittling to contributors not contributing code.
Because the project needs to interact with more people from different background and expertise, I set up a place where I could invite people on a case by case basis. This allowed me to moderate and build a place that had a purpose and tone that would be more open to people who wanted to contribute or ask questions, and so on.
It has waned over the years, but I maintain the space, and a community member has created a Matrix room that is bridged to the Discord server.
As the project is entering a new phase and direction, we have discussed moving development meetings to the Matrix/ Discord space. We could, in theory build this space considerably since it is more feature rich for interaction, and we can potentially increase interaction and productivity.
Regarding how meetings are structured, I have suggested that we provide development and other core infrastructure updates, and then updates from our third party partners like StormyCloud. We can then highlight new research, applications, or provide a tutorial.
We would need to work with people who want to create a short presentation, perhaps use an open stage interview style.
