RPi4 USB-RJ45 adapter #2

Hi, I'm new to GitHub, so forgive me if there's a way to submit this that I'm not following properly.

I've been trying to setup your version of Smoothwall on my RPi4 and, overall it seems to be working well, but I'm having intermittent trouble accessing internet which I think is related to the USB to RJ45 adapter I'm using.

Now, from the research I've done, it seems that there is a common functionality issue with ASIX AX88179 drivers, for which a new kernel module needs to be made to update the drivers. Apparently, this is now standard with versions of Raspbian 3.9 or newer, but I'm guessing not in your Smoothwall distribution. I tried installing the drivers manually using some instructions I found online, but I'm not having any luck.

Can you suggest a method to accomplish this so I can confirm if the adapter is causing the issue?

Thanks!

EDIT: after playing around with the Smoothwall terminal for a while, I found that the kernel module for the asix drivers is already on there, but yet I'm still having issues with the adapter. I'm not quite sure what to do at this point. Any suggestions you might have are appreciated. I really want to try this setup as my firewall, but can't with this issue. I also considered doing VLAN trunking to avoid using the adapter, but found out that smoothwall can't do that.

I'm sorry for not answering sooner. I've been playing Devuan waiting on update 11. Not sure, think that is the adapter I use too.... You plugging it into usb2 or usb3 port ??

Thanks for the reply. I tried with 2 different adapters. Both with the same chipset. I plugged into USB3 ports. I think (it's been a couple of months, so I'm not 100% sure on this) that when I used my USB 2 adapter on a USB 2 port it worked fine, but not USB 3 on USB 3. I've heard these can be finicky, so maybe that's just the nature of things, but it would be nice if it could work properly. This setup would make for an awesome firewall.

Either that or if there's a way to make smoothwall use VLAN trunking, that would resolve the problem too.

Either way, great work on the setup. I loved playing around with it, but unfortunately I won't be using it for the time being since it's not 100% reliable.

Cheers!
