Samsung Galaxy Prevail missing rtecdc.bin? #1044

Which device (manufacturer, type)?
Samsung Galaxy Prevail

Which firmware is installed?
2.2.2

What version of wireless tether are you using?
3.1 beta 2

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Press 'Pressed to start tethering'
2. Setup method set to 'Auto'
3. Device Profile set to Generic (tried the 2 samsung galaxy options as well
just in case)

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I see no errors in the 'show log' area. Can connect just fine with or without
authentication through my laptop (win 7 64). Just can't get internet to work.
Phone does have 3g at time of testing.

Please provide any additional information below.
I don't care if it uses ad-hoc or infrastructure but neither worked as far as
internet goes. If i try barnacle wifi, i get an error message saying 'missing
rtecdc.bin' file (so i assume thats the same issue wireless tether for root is
having), so I have tried the steps you listed here
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=357#c2 but i
couldn't find a samsung galaxy prevail 'dump'. I tried using a samsung behold 2
rtecdc.bin file i found from
http://androidforums.com/samsung-behold-2/136276-barnacle-wifi-tethering-testers
-needed.html - Would that work or will only one for the prevail work? Also, the
Upload and Download numbers do steadily climb while I have the app running.
Please help, running out of ideas.

Well. Some wifi-cards (intel on win7) have some serious problems with
adhoc-mode.

Check:

Another question. Does this device come with some kind of "official
hotspot"-feature?

I don't think it can be the wifi card because I can connect my old G1 (tmobile)
just fine to my laptop and browse the internet with wireless tether app. Its
just my new samsung prevail (boost), that like i said, connects just fine but
no internet. Infact the connection on the laptop says "Connected with internet".

As for your second question, no, there is no 'official hotspot' option,
feature, app. None of the above. Boost doesn't offer it.

Okay update, I have internet! At least in a limited fashion. I can ping/connect
to internet IP addresses, I just can't browse the web, domains just wont
resolve. Any ideas? I'm still investigating.

Current settings are now:
Device Profile: Samsung Galaxy Indulge
Setup Method: WEXT (ad-hoc)

Change preferred DNS is set to 8.8.8.8. Should I mess with that? Maybe try to
find another public DNS I can use? I'm noob with DNS stuff though.

I'm having a similar issue and can connect to the wifi tether on my Prevail
with both my PC and a wifi-only Droid Incredible. Neither device can surf the
Internet. I have not found an answer yet so I'll follow this thread until I
do. To answer the question about DNS...you can Google "public dns servers" and
come up with a list of addresses that you can use in either dns field in the
wireless tether app on the Prevail.

I found settings somewhere else on the web that led me to set these parameters:
Device Profile = Samsung Galaxy Indulge
Setup Method = Softap for Samsung

I just can't figure out why I can't surf. Anyone come up with a solution yet?
Thanks.
:)tk

Thanks!
