Cannot stay connected longer than a few minutes #488

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Which device (manufacturer, type)?
Evo 4G

Which firmware is installed?
2.2 Froyo

What version of wireless tether are you using?
2.0.5pre7

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Start tether
2. Use Internet for 2-3 minutes
3. PC loses wifi connection

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
I should be able to stay connected for much longer periods of time. Also, to
reconnect, I must stop and restart tethering on the Evo.

Please provide any additional information below.
2.0.2(theory of evolution) works fine for me on Android 2.1 and I do not
experience these frequent disconnects. Please let me know if there is a log
file or some other information that I could provide that might be useful.

does it make a difference for you if you have wpa2-encryption enabled or not?

I get the same problem regardless of encryption.

Changing encryption, SSID, LAN setting, channel, access control, and wake lock
settings do not have any impact on the disconnect issues. I also tried keeping
the phone awake by flipping from screen to screen and I was still disconnected.
The phone is also kept close to the PC and gets a very strong 3G and 4G
connection. 4G on or off doesn't seem to make any difference.

I am having the same problems. HTC OTA Froyo 2.2, *FINAL*, build 3.36.651.6
(Rooted) Odexed. [Kernel]netarchy-toastmod, updated for 2.2 - Version 3.7.8b.

When I get disconnected, the phone has stopped broadcasting its SSID. Maybe the
wifi nic is being shut off or something. Android Wireless Tether still says
that it is tethering.

Who of you is using a stock kernel?

I am using the stock kernel - I had not commented on it but I did star the
issue since I am experiencing the issue as well

I'm using a stock kernel and can reproduce this. It seems that if I stop
tethering, go turn on my wifi widget, and then start tethering it functions
again for me.

I use the stock kernel with pre7. I get the same behavior though when using
pre6 with netarchy's kernel. From what I can tell, pre6 doesn't work right
with netarchy's kernel.

Harald I will get the info you requested over ASAP. As Beezy stated, using our
ROM (EVO 2.2 built off .6) we can connect until the battery dies and not have
an issue. I actually typed this while tethering.

Someone having the issue please download and test on either of our ROM's found
here - http://forum.androidcentral.com/showthread.php?p=259467#post259467

DO NOT DISCUSS THE ROM ON HARALD'S PAGE. SIMPLY TEST TO SEE IF IT WORKS FOR
YOU OR NOT AND REPORT BACK! If you have any questions about the actual ROM
take it to the forum linked above.

For other people having this problem:

I flashed Fresh Evo 3.1.0.1 Rom, which has a new kernel (FroYo | OFFICIAL
3.26.651.6 OTA). Then I updated tether to the latest (2.0.5-pre7) and things
are working fine for me now. I'm not even gonna try netarchy kernel now - as
long as I can tether, I'm happy with stock kernel.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I have tried pre7 release on both Netarchy kernel and the kernel included with
Fresh 3.1.0.1. Both cases resulted in dropped tethers.

I think I finally figured out what my issue really is. I installed the AC ROM
2.2 from August 7, 2010 (not the lite version). I was still getting
disconnected. I installed Wifi scanner from the market. There are several
wifi networks in my area using channel 6. I walked across the street where
wifi scanner found far fewer wifi networks and was able to stay connected for
20+ minutes.

Unfortunately, changing the channel in the front-end interface doesn't actually
change the channel. I was able to change the channel by editting
/data/data/android.tether/conf/tether.conf and get it to change channels. On
channel 1 I don't get disconnected. Also, my laptop reports the speed and
signal quality. On channel 6 the speed and quality would fluctuate quite a
bit. On channel 1 it stays pegged at 54.0 and Excellent. I have now been
connected continuously for 20+ minutes. I will report back if I experience any
other issues.

@eth -
I can confirm that by changing the channel in the tether.conf - I went to 11 -
that it will work without incident

I have been tethered for over an hour now no problems
Thanks for the info!

Oh yeah. The configuration-file (tether.conf) is not updated correctly when
changing the channel. This is fixed now in r478 and will be part of -pre8.

Original comment by harald....@gmail.com on 9 Aug 2010 at 11:07

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Changing the channel with the tether.conf file allowed me to stay tethered
longer (about 30min) but it still ends up dropping the link. Once the link
dropped, I could no longer find the phone's SSID in the network list. I used
channel 2 and channel 11 with the same result.

Original comment by ricardo....@gmail.com on 10 Aug 2010 at 12:57

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
-pre8 is now available for download. this should allow to set the channel via
gui.

Try changing to different channels. I had the same problem and switching to
channel 1 fixed my problem completely. I have yet to be disconnected. Good luck.

Still have this issue. Sometimes it works longer without disconnecting,
sometimes only lasts a few minutes. Whenever it stops, doing a "stop tethering"
followed by "start tethering" gets it going again... for a few more minutes...

It does seem to be related to the number and frequency of other networks. In my
office building, where there are 40-50 other networks running (at least one on
EVERY channel) it only lasts a few min on average. At home, with only 5-6
neighbors networks, it might last 15-20 minutes, but always disconnects at the
end and won't broadcast SSID and allow new connections until restarted.

VERY ANNOYING and makes it barely useful. Tried pre-11, same thing as on all
previous ones.

Even in a network-congested environment, clearly there's a bug in this thing
that stops it from broadcasting.

Herald we have to make a point to fix this, what can we do.. I would gladly pay
more if this is resolved. Like onlypric above said before it annoying and makes
it pretty much useless to be disconnecting every 5 mins.. and worst there is no
error so you dont even KNOW

@cmurad00 @ eth @harald.mue I would like to try to change channels on my droid

I'm running 2.0.2 (theory of evolution). How do I install -pre8 or change the

I'm having the same issue. I've had it since 2.0.2. I'm currently using the
RC1. I have an EVO 4G with Sprint stock ROM 3.29.651.5. It also happened with
all previous versions of the ROMs since the initial release of the Evo.

I haven't been able to try changing the channel by editing the tether.conf file
because I can't find that file. There is a data folder on the sdcard and on
the root of the device, but none lead to the tether.conf file.

Can someone help me with this? How do I find that file?

I'm navigating using Astro and ES Explorer. Should I be connecting via the
computer?

Same issue here. EVO 4G, latest EVO update, rooted (unrevoked method).

Frequent disconnects on every release I have tried (RC2 on down to pre_11).
Encryption on or off, same problem. Tried a couple different channels, same
problem.

Only usable for no more than 5 minutes or so.

Problem persists with 2.0.6, Droid2Global, 2.4.330.A956 with Froyo, verizon.
2.0.7 greatly improved, but still drops connected devices.
It is -not- related to voice/data conflict.

Same for me. Even with the channel change to 1 or 11, mine drops CONSTANTLY.

I thought I was having this problem, but found out that it was turning off
Tether because my WiFi was automatically turning back on. It actually had
nothing to do with Tether.

To fix, I went to Settings > More Settings > Mobile Networks > Connections
Optimizer and unchecked the Connections Optimizer. Now WiFi doesn't
automatically turn on, and Tether stays active.

The downside, I suppose, is that it may stay on LTE longer than normal and not
automatically sign into my home WiFi, but I fix that with NFC chips.

Sprint Samsung GS3. Model # SPH-L710. Android version 4.1.2.
