Exact same issue here. I've tested by downloading large files directly on the
phone, and no issue. But as soon as I put any kind of load on the tethering the
3G connection drops.

Try version 2.0.7 ...
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk
This should help if your carrier is vzw.

2.0.7 has been very reliable with my Droid X on Verizon so far. 2.0.6 used to
drop 3G data after awhile. Here's hoping 2.0.7 remains stable.

I have the exact same problem here. I keep thinking that this is a side-effect
of how Verizon does accounting for tethering - the 3G connection re-connects
with different credentials when tethering is enabled. When the phone itself
wants data, 3G disconnects, reconnects with phone credentials, then continues.
Leads to 3G on/off/on/off.
Not sure what causes the "thrash", but there's gotta be a way to fix this.
I have the problem on my DX2 and my D3, even with very recent WifiTether builds.
