2 years ago Its really good at massaging and homogenizing heterogenous data and accepting alot of different formats. It can take flat files, input via rest, watch databases, create lookups, be installed on lots of different devices.
I see it as another tool on the belt with something like Microsoft BI but more granular and technical.
ELK Stack is nice but your regular expressions need to be next-level and dashboards arent as easy to build. It also misses the direct database connections and other apps that you can install on Splunk to really flesh it out. Overall I would use ELK if I had budget constraints or didnt need to take dashboards to C-suites (because it's so developer/sysadmin centric).
