Create a standard for game abbreviations #78

Closed csauve closed 2 years ago

Given the large number of editions of Halo titles, we need an unambiguous way to refer to them without being overly verbose each time. The standard should be added to the editor's guide (EDITORS.md) and applied across the wiki for any case we refer to a game by abbreviation.

Generally, the host OS or platform is indicated by prefixes and suffixes

Prefixes

Gearbox

Abbr. Full
T Trial (Edition)
R Retail (Edition)
C Custom (Edition)

I've excluded the Edition suffix in abbreviations so it's easier to differ from "Combat Evolved" abbreviations, but this also leaves more up to interpretation. I'm fond of HTE and HRE, so HCE's unfortunate position is just that.

Now the question is, “Which naming convention should we use?”

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

Abbr. Full Name
CEA 360 Halo:CE Anniversary for Xbox 360
CEA X360 =
MCC-CEA MCC Halo:CE Anniversary
MCC-CEA-X1 = for Xbox One
CEA X1 =
MCC-CEA-PC = for PC
CEA PC =

Halo 2

Abbr. Full Name
H2X Halo 2 for Xbox
H2V Halo 2 for Windows Vista
H2PC Halo 2 Project Cartographer (based on H2V)
H2R Halo 2 Reclaimed (based on H2PC)
H2A Halo 2 Anniversary (MCC)
H2A-X1 Halo 2 Anniversary (MCC) (Xbox One)
H2A-PC Halo 2 Anniversary (MCC) (PC)

For Halo 2, H2X and H2V are predominantly established. H2A is an often-used alias to MCC-H2A.

Halo 3, ODST, Reach, and 4 are all limited to their 360 and MCC releases. The MCC prefix and the 360 suffix should suffice.

H5 is synonymous with H5:G.

I'm making the call that this is how we will do things for H1:

We will avoid "CEA" or other terms where "CE" stands for Combat Evolved. CE will only mean custom edition.

H1A

why not H1MCC?

H1MCC H2MCC H3MCC

H1A i feel like should be its own designation, as the MCC version of the game is completely different from the standalone 360 game.

H1A is the line of the engine that includes Saber tech. H1A is in MCC and represents the most current version of that line. Sure, there are some differences between H1A 360 and H1A MCC but I'm not really aware of anyone modding H1A 360, so for c20 I think it's fine to use H1A to mean H1A in MCC by default. Contrast this with H1X vs H1PC and H1CE where each has more to talk about.
