After reading info about this subject, I have come up with an opinion : open and closed source systems both have their pros and cons and advocates and critics. Developers advocate open source , businessmen advocate closed source. In our case, what I thought would help is having a holistic view in mind in crafting our strategy. In the immediate term, it sure helps us develop and ship faster - obvious advantage! For the long-term we could ask ourselves from the perspective of a potential buyer of our company : How comfortable would I be to invest in a company that has open-sourced it's product? What if a better funded competitor comes along? How safe would my investment be?
On the other hand we could consider also from our own perspective- Could there be any good reasons why this particular project should be closed source? Who would care if we open-sourced it? Maybe our users and audience are all non-technical. I think honestly facing these questions will help us arrive at a good decision. There's a saying I like - 'good decisions have good options.'

This is some of the info I looked at in addition to what Chaiwa provided http://blog.codecombat.com/why-you-should-open-source-your-startup http://forrestfirm.com/common-mistakes-that-startups-make-technology-open-source-software-and-intellectual-property/ http://tomtunguz.com/open-source-exits-by-license/ http://sftp.polsinelli.com/publications/suv/upd1015suv.htm

I see the caution is about the fact we are a startup and our investments should be able to pay off in the end! Sounds good and we seem to have enough reasons to have it closed source, but lets hear what others think!
