Check out panel 1D in Nowacki & Abrams 2008 - http://www.nrs.fs.fed.us/pubs/jrnl/2008/nrs_2008_nowacki_001.pdf This might help explain some of the stem density / basal area / biomass differences between N. Wisconsin and N. Minnesota that we observe in our paper.
