My Bank sent me an confirmation TAN for online banking and its shown as coming from one of my contacts. I could not find a related issue, so open as new.

Phone: Oneplus one OS: Lineage OS Bacon simple SMS: 5.8.0

do you see proper sender in other apps? Has the bank sent it from some real number, or an alias?

Thanks for picking this up! On another App I see the bank name as sender. I dont know how to determine alias from real number in the SMS messages. When I enter the message, my friends name changes to the banks name after a second for a second, and then changes back to my friends name and stays like this. In the message overview, its always my friends name.

Try finding the app in your device settings and do a "Clear data" (or "Clear storage") on it. It will just reset your app settings, wont remove any messages. Just wondering if it will fetch the wrong name again if you open the message a few times after it.

Baaaaaaatz commented 3 years ago

Done, and also restarted, but still same behaviour.

Another thing i noted in connection to this: If I open SMS from another sender, the senders name is shown for a moment, before only the number, but not the name is shown. after clearing storage, when switching from overview, to viewing a single conversation it asked for "Make call" permission (wich I had to allow to view single SMS conversations).

Side note: I installed from F-Droid, not PlayStore.

tibbi commented 3 years ago

not sure what you mean here. So if you open the conversation, the proper sender name is shown for a small moment?

Baaaaaaatz commented 3 years ago

Exactly. But never in the overview of all conversations.

tibbi commented 3 years ago

can you please compare the numbers? Isnt the issue that your banks number is "555" and the shown contacts one is like "123 456 555"?

Baaaaaaatz commented 3 years ago

In short: I cant see the number of the bank or credit card institute.

Longer: It happens with two senders: My bank and my credit card institute. for both I see the name of someone else from my contact list, but never the number of the original sender. It only switches to the name of the bank/institute for a second when switching from overview to conversation view.

The numbers of the two different friends are pretty random, so its hard to tell if your example above could be the case.

Amazon or my phone provider are shown correctly.

another reporter: When I get a system message from the Telco, saying that the number I dialed earlier is now available, the sms app says the message came from one of my contacts (could contain a typo at numbers)

The Telco system number is 1775. My contact number ends at *17751.

@tibbi In this case, does the telco send the message as 1775 or as the telco name? Is the telco name saved in the contact list?

I have the same issue, it worth to share what I discovered. Device - Sony XPERIA XZ2 compact dual, Android 10 (but I'm not sure if it's important). I also use f-droid version of app (currently installed latest version 5.10.1).

I can confirm that the issue I described is fixed in simple sms app ver. 5.10.2

Baaaaaaatz commented 3 years ago

5.10.2 works for me as well. Thanks for the update!
