Feature request: disable automatic download of MMS messages #221

Hi,

I cannot find that option in the app so i presume that MMS messages are being automatically downloaded. Is there a way to explicitly disable this? Thank you

downloaded from where you mean? We arent downloading anything

Aga-C commented 3 years ago

@tibbi MMS messages are downloaded from the Internet. Network just sends an info to the phone that there is a message available and phone automatically opens internet connection to retrieve the message content (thus it uses transfer). You can read here how it works: https://nowsms.com/faq/how-mms-works. Turning automatic MMS downloading is very useful, especially while on roaming, to not get caught with higher transfer rates just because someone has sent an MMS. For example, OnePlus messaging app has this feature:

our app has no internet access, we arent downloading anything from anywhere

Aga-C commented 3 years ago

@tibbi App can have no internet access, but it doesn't change that MMS is sent over GPRS and some mobile carriers are adding MMS to data usage, especially while on roaming. You can see for example here: https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/418195/why-do-mms-require-mobile-data-to-be-sent-received or here: https://www.reddit.com/r/GoogleFi/comments/hohcdv/why_do_mms_messages_contribute_to_my_data_usage/.

Since the app handles MMS, there should be an option to turn off automatic retrieving of their attachments.

well okay then, guess I can keep it open

Aga-C commented 3 years ago

@tibbi It's still closed 😅

Also, it uses access point configured in the phone itself for MMS downloading. Usually you receive MMS and 2/3/4G settings, with access points, after inserting SIM card into the phone.
