I am pondering the same, cumbersome solution as yours :(
It would be very nice to have the blogs and forums accessible to folks who buy only a basic membership and are not allowed to access the entire site.
I have looked around at some of the other issues, and I saw that Calvin said: "The whole idea was that a membership site is for one group of people" which seems to be why each page in a membership site doesn't have the option of setting different permissions - this was an option in spaces.
I don't think it's that uncommon to offer different tiers of memberships in one site. People buy one product for access to everything, and another product for access just to specific things.
So my request is for blogs and forums to have permission settings on them in membership sites.
My solution this year was to have 2 different sites for the 2 different membership levels and it's a real pain to do this, sending out emails and having 2 different sets of links to work with. Also it means the group is split in 2, it would be so great if everyone could be in the class together.
