As far as I know, there are two notation systems that use U,F,R,L,B,D,BR,BL.
One way I describe this is to hold the FTO such that you either have a UB edge (Ben's notation) or a UF edge (the wrong way (/s)). It's not great, but it's a step in the right direction.
