Remuco client on Pocket PC - Windows Mobile 2003se #49

What is your environment?
* OS: pocket pc / ce 2003se
* Remuco version:
* Client device:dell axim x30
* Player:banshee

What's the matter?

I'm really struggling to find a way to use remuco on this handheld. I
can't use my phones as they're all AT&T and this old handheld would be an
ideal remote control. I can't be the only one in this situation. I've
tried a number of j2me and midlet managers like IBM j9 and just can't find
a way to make it work. Is there any way that you could either provide a
how-to, or maybe an alternative client to run on 2003se.

Would be much appreciated. Thanks, Geoff

Did you try customizing the client as described in
http://code.google.com/p/remuco/wiki/ClientCustomization (disabling Bluetooth)?
In
issue 39 a user reported to get Remuco working in the JBed MIDlet manager by
disabling Bluetooth.

I've tried disabling bluetooth on the client and the server side but no luck
with
that. I also tried adding in the explicit socket permission on the client. I
did do
a fresh reinstall of ibm j9 and managed to get it to load the remuco client.
It just
doesn't do anything when I try and run it. Am I missing something on running
the
client? like how does it know where to look on the network for the server-side?

Server side Bluetooth does not matter here.

Ok, and the client customization had no influence on that, only the
re-installation
of j9?

What do you mean exactly? Do you see a white screen? Can you select commands
from the
client's menu, but nothing happens then?

BTW .. if you want to see how the client _should_ work, you can run it in the
emulator. You already build the client yourself, so a simple
$ ant run.microemu.default
(in the same dir where you build the client) starts the client in the emulator.
See
http://code.google.com/p/remuco/wiki/ClientCustomization#Emulation for details.

I will have another crack at this over the weekend, installing the 0.9.2,
customizing
the client and reloading.

In the meantime...What I see in J9 is the the client is installed OK. when I
launch
it, all i see is a blank white window, the header bar says IBM MIDP. If I
click on
anything the window goes and I'm back to the today screen. If I try and run j9
again, i get a msg sayings it's already running. I have to go to
settings/memory to
kill it.

Also I did try the emulator. I got the phone image to appear but was not able
to
interact with it at all.

What should I see when the client starts on the device? How does the client
know
about the server? is there a setup screen or something to enter the server
address
or location? or does it search and find it itself?

Thanks,  geoff

When the client starts, you should see screens similar to the emulator
screenshots
shown at the bottom of the ClientCustomization page, i.e. screens to
configure/setup
a connection to your computer.

I think the emulator requires Sun's JDK to work properly (I remember to had
similar
problems when using GCJ - GNU Java compiler, I use Ubuntu and I uninstalled gcj
and
instead installed sun-java6-jdk).

I'll see if it is possible to emulate JavaME apps in an J9 environment on a PC.
Maybe
this helps to find the problem source.

I finally got it working using TAO_Intent Midlet manager (MIDP 2.0:v10.1.2.76)

Hope this helps out anyone else trying to use WM 2003SE

Thanks for your help.  Geoff

Great, thanks for feedback. For sure this will help others.

Does the regular client work in TAO Intent or is the customized Bluetooth-free
version required?
