Maybe we could ask Chuck Hall: www.3dsystems.com/30-years-innovation

So Chuck and 3D Systems also developed the .stl file format, still in use today, to complete the electronic 'handshake' from the CAD software and transmit files for the printing of 3D objects.

JTEC/WTEC Panel Report on Rapid Prototyping in Europe and Japan Very interesting,.. especially chapter 8 on CAD References for that chapter list the STL File Specification at the top of the list by 3D Systems (so it must exist. Also the fabbers site also lists [2nd hand]the specification as the reference in the book he is citing from.)
