Random variations should be possible to use, maybe with this way:

{variation here}:
        [curved] (north-east|east-north) = - [shape=north-east]
        [curved] (north-west|west-north) = - [shape=north-west]
        [curved] (south-east|east-south) = - [shape=south-east]
        [curved] (south-west|west-south) = - [shape=south-west]

        curved = north-east, north-west, south-east, south-west

Or just something like this:

        curved = - [shape=north-east] | [shape=north-west] | [shape=south-east] | [shape=south-west]

Same for NBT tags.
