Can't prevent Sitemesh from decorating every page....

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. trying to exclude a page from being decorated by sitemesh.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
page is always decorated despite trying to use a new decorator, setting 
exclusion paths, or specifying the decorator in the page. All seems to be 
ignored.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
i think it is 1.1

Please provide any additional information below.
i tried all the ways i know of to get this done without success. the goal is to 
provide a page that is used for json responses of ajax calls, etc.
let me know what to try next. thanks
