Scale/crop works differently for image preview from IconView behaviour. Investigate scale vs scale/crop operations.

Could not confirm on Acer A100 tablet

Seems to be scalecropped correctly with various image sizes.

Problem occurs when taking a picture with phone vertically. Picture is rotated 90degrees.
