After further research (and correcting a nasty typo) I found this post stating that Kirby is using an SA-1 chip on its cartridge and that these are not compatible. A real cart is needed. A list of games using expansion chips is located here, although games using a DSP-1/4 chip may work according to the post.
I'd suggest we leave the issue here for other ppl searching for the issue. I'd just kindly you to confirmation and close it.
