Is this compatible with 1.8.x? I cannot find any unit tests to run to confirm compatibility.

composer.json says 1.6.*

You could try it with 1.8.* and we could create a new tag if it works. BTW, most development of this has been done by @jhuet. I actually don't use doctrine so I'm not very familiar.
