ML Setting to allow Sending / Receiving email #112

Open gsf00001 opened 7 years ago

What is the feature?

Ability to enable/disable by ML the sending and receiving of email (one setting for each - sending, receiving)

I assumed that this setting existed and I somehow couldn't find it, as it seems like a basic setting. I just found out at the community forum that this functionality doesn't exist. On github an FR exists for revamping the entire notification and email/notification section, but although related, this FR is separate and more of an overall on/off switch per ML.

Why?

The more activity and/or Plugins that use the messaging system just creates more emails, and often for trivial items.

Your thoughts/input are welcomed :)

Personally, I like this feature as I use Sendgrid and in another script, I use a plugin to disable email notifications for the basic user group to avoid getting bounces or wasting my quota on spammers. I'll check to see if it's already on the list of improvements.

Thanks Donna. I swear - Donna is a pseudonym for a Team of people. There's just no way one person can respond so quickly to so many posts on different systems, be so knowledgeable of so much, and be available almost 24/7/365 :)

But then again, maybe it's true that Super Heroes do exist :)

Thank you :)

I've added this to our list to discuss for upcoming features. The core developers will need to determine whether this can be implemented without a negative impact on the software.

yw.

Well, there's typically a negative impact whenever an extra something is added, but hopefully this will be considered a minor negative impact or will offset something else so the net effect is negligible. Plus, any plus/minus offsetting often also depends on the usage of a particular feature/function.

I personally have a dedicated server and i hit all mailboxes without going into junk or spam.

Used mailgun and send grid once, but alot of the servers were already blacklisted when checking on mxtools.

Be a nice addition, but the notifications section needs to have global control. Because the notifications email is what will affect everyone one.

And if you install a new plugin after for example 3000 members already joined. By default them notifications are enabled as default. you can only adjust in admin, those after from install date

I did make a feature request about what i mentioned here https://github.com/SocialEngine/phpv4-feature-requests/issues/44

Poeticjustice - you are correct, there should be global control. This post could actually be part of your #44, but I originally started this at the community forum and it was suggested I add it here.

Basically, the entire notification/email-notification systems should be completely revamped with much more flexibility and ADMIN control. Once Plugins are added, the number of notifications and emails possible is astronomical (as in one update or new post creating thousands of notifications & emails - this is ridiculous and should be reined in).
