Support for can bus, firmware gathering, keepalive messaging over UART. General code cleanup.

Not expecting this to be merged as this repo seems stale, but should help some people who are looking for these features in the future.

To be honest I was unaware of this pull, and with me merging development into master this was closed. I will take a look at merging this today.
