Got this working now for our company liquid / credit / assets tracking:

• in a private repo I have some js code that lists:
  • our expenses
  • date, description, amount (eur or usd)
  • vat tracked separately, if applicable (and whether vat was paid in NL, EU, or non-EU)
  • write-off periods, for instance writeOffStrategy 'monthly' for office space, 'yearly' for domain name registration, or with a specific writeOffStart and writeOffEnd
  • hours worked on various projects, and hourly rates for that.
  • from that I have 3 functions, 'buy', 'writeOff' and 'work', that convert these rich event descriptions into simplified transactions:
  • -liquid; +assets for what we buy and for salary payments,
  • -liquid; +credit for the deductable vat we pay over it,
  • -assets for writeOff (this creates one transaction per day, we don't really need financial insight more granular than a day)
  • +credit for hours worked
  • -credit; +liquid when a customer pays a bill, or the government returns the deductable vat we paid
  • salaries are written of per calendar day into thin air, and hours worked are entered like they come in from thin air; there is no tracking of productivity, nor of holiday / sick leave / pto budgets. So in that sense it's really quite a simple bookkeeping system.
  • these transactions are sorted and grouped, then accumulated over time, to create three time series:
  • seriesLiquid accumulates the +liquid and -liquid transaction
  • seriesLiquidCredit accumulates liquid + credit
  • seriesLiquidCreditAssets accumulates liquid + credit + assets, in other words, equity.
