To reproduce and fix these issues I would first need to get hold of a Windows 10 machine and set-up a QGIS development environment there.
Can you try the verification without the background layer, just the axial_map and unlinks layers?
Or have you found the solution to the problem in the mean time?
Thanks @Royal2Flush
I had the same problem this weekend, using the 2.18.28 version. The "Verify Layer" option crashed every time I run it. The problem was solved when I unistalled all the content and remaining folders and installed 2.18.14 version. Also, others QGIS issues was solved too. I don't know, it seem to be some problem on 2.18.28 version. Hope it can works to you.
Best regards.
Thank you for reporting your solution!
Indeed there seem to be several other issues with versions since 2.18.14. These do not occur on the Mac so it went unnoticed.
I posted on my blog a manual describing the steps to solve the problem. The post is in Portuguese, but there is a link to download the manual in English:

@alexbccastro Thank you for creating this post. I will link to it and the PDF in the SST mailing list.
Hello,
I'm trying to to follow the tutorial using the provided sample dataset. However, on step 5 when trying to verify the axial_map layer, QGIS crashes without error message.
My setup: QGIS 2.18.28 (run as admin) The SST Plugin found in the plugin store for that version (0.2.1) depthmapXnet 0.35 Windows10 QuickMapServices 0.19.10 instead of the recommended OpenLayers Plugin for the background map (but I doubt that's relevant)
Can you reproduce this or have any ideas what could go wrong?
