To expand further on random star types: why stop at just stars? Have it support black holes, binary or trinary systems, wormholes, pulsars, magnetars, neutron stars, strange matter stars, the works. They don't necessarily need to be functionally different from any other type, but having the flavor for consistency across UI's would go a long way towards a better "theater of the mind."
