It might be worthwhile to forego the level 2 products and rather only do a sidecar for the geolocation VNP03MOD / VNP03IMG products. The lat/lon SDS of VNP09 is merely a replication of this data.

The VNP09 granules actually do not contain geolocation SDSs. They consequently have to be used together with the VNP03* products.
I have opened an issue for the VPN03 files, which seemingly must be done first...
VNP09 is the VIIRS pendant to MOD09; i.e. Level 2 surface reflectance at 750m and 375m resolution.
VIIRS is odd since its level 2 data is in a forced, artificial, (almost) regular grid. So when we see VIIRS level2 swath data, we might be confused because it looks like it is gridded (no bowtie effect, constant IFOV size). Apparently this is a result of odd specification requirements from the US military.
