Why have reference 'codes' for catalog output? #1996

reference code category

Noyes chalcid database and Gobson's BASIS supply reference codes for each paper (i.e. HeratyWoDa1987 for Heraty Woolley & Darling 1987; first 6 letters of first author and then two letters for each of the next two subsequent authors, after that a suffix letter for additional papers in that year).

Why? in the catalog output below, there is an efficiency gained by the abbreviated codes that can be added to each citation, associate record or geographic association. For an output, this is an essential contraction. Note that in BASIS, for catalog output, you can toggle various features such as including the reference ciations (or not), spelling out geographical areas (or using abbreviations), or spelling out museums, or codens). All very useful for building output.

reference output with codes (note that the 'et al.' problem if et al means different junior authors is solved by using codes [not part of the example below])

Just a thought...
