Add subclass of "Loans" - digital/image loan #2120

Open tmcelrath opened 3 years ago

Track human action to generate dataset and hand off. Not physical specimens leaving building, but specimens are used.

Can be data by itself, also images of specimens.

@tmcelrath when you find time, could you mock up this action? Is the data captured in the Loan form to make it easy to "track human action" you are describing? Please elaborate your use cases? Thanks.

As a curator I get requests for data associated with certain specimens E.g. send me the INHS data of "Shivaphis celti" specimens (9 specimens total) Or, I want an image of the holotype of "Aus bus" but I don't want the specimen itself. I can: 1) send the data without tracking it 2) Create a loan in TW currently, including those specimens, and then assign dates as follows (all dates are the same, specimens loaned and returned same day): image This implies that the loan was digital, not physical.

So yes, the idea would be to track similar to a traditional physical loan, but as a different "class" - e.g.explicitly say that this is a digital data request, not a "loan" as traditionally defined since no specimens leave the building or are even examined.

Alternatively, we can also do something like GBIF does and generate a DOI for every data request/download that happens, and then track them as sources, not as loans.
