Select the programmer with "(ATTinyCore)" after the name. Otherwise the ide will ignore the directive in my platform.txt that instructs it to use the version of avrdude.conf supplied by my core which includes that definition, resulting in the error you got.
My core supplies it's own version of avrdude.conf ti support some of the newer parts and fix bugs in other parts present in the version distributed with the ide.
Words cannot describe how sick I am of people running into this issue which is an obvious bug in the ide which the dev's insist is intended.
Got the error today with the most recent version of ATTinyCore and avrdude 6.3. I have tried it directly from the cli as well as with arduino 1.9.0 beta.
Let me know what other information you need from me. Output from avrdude for supported parts.
attiny828 isn't listed! Help. Thanks.
