Code cleanup for a stricter pylint

only code changes are

  1. Using f strings
  2. Refactoring a few method names.
  3. remove unneeded keys()

Coverage Status

coverage: 86.121%. remained the same when pulling 6e68dbb48d4d5ae85ae3a3c44a236e9dd657f2e1 on pylint_default into c6a61ba970a561613911fa136e20a42df6c9cb8d on master.
