Long-term air pollution represents a great environmental threat to induce premature ageing and with ageing, our skin may become more vulnerable to environmental hazards, which then even amplify the effect of air pollution exposure. Most importantly, in contrast to many other risks, exposure to outdoor air pollution occurs during the entire lifespan, which might lead to increased skin problems later in life. There is an urgent need to perform studies on the effect of long-term air pollution exposure on ageing processes and skin-related outcomes in China, a developing country with a huge growth of production of air pollutants in a booming industry.

The study will investigate long-term effects of air pollution exposure on skin-related outcomes in an elderly Chinese population. We will collect 3,000 study subjects, whose age is over 40 in the existing Taizhou Cohort. We will fully characterize skin-related outcomes and observe the ethnic difference of skin-related signs between Caucasian and Chinese population. The focus will be on gene-air pollution interactions to identify possible susceptible groups and additionally identify the systemic inflammation and its role in skin-related outcomes after long-term air pollution exposure in Chinese population.
