it looks like AoE uses aspects of Dx not implemented in ddhack at the present 
time

..I realised for some games, we need per game hacks.
For instance, AOE1 will crash when logging the blitter function of DDSurface(), 
especially during movies. Otherwise the logger works fine and shows this is in 
fact a IDDraw 1 game, not DirectDraw 7.

I've been working on getting AoE 2 working and I've gotten everything except 
the GDI text to work. I have my changes on Github.

I've been working on this outside of the Google Code project and have gotten 
some good advancements on getting the text to show up. It's still a little 
glitchy and things like text boxes and chat messages aren't displaying yet, but 
if you really want, you can download and compile it yourself.
