HID keyboard cannot enter asterisk, dollar sign etc

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. connect freedom pro keyboard to galaxy nexus as HID device
2. try to enter *&^$#@! in connectbot

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
expect ^&*%
see instead output of F8, F7, etc

What version of the product are you using (you can see this by using Menu
-> About in the Host List)?
1.7.1

What type of system are you trying to connect to?
linux, localhost

If you are able to connect, what is the output of "echo $TERM", "uname -a",
and any other relevant information on the host?
1!can't echo $TERM because I can't type a dollar sign

Please provide any additional information below.
The freedom pro in HID works elsewhere on the nexus, For example, I can type 
the characters here **@*$#@%!. Can there please be a way to turn off shift + 
number= Fkey ?

Without * and $ on HID keyboard this is app is pretty useless for me
