Domain Name, SSL, and Paths #3

Today St. Paul Church and School uses the following domain names:

I am not sure what the original intent was by separating these two, but because St. Paul overall operates as a single entity, this should theoretically be a single domain name that can direct to each function.

Personally, I am open to ideas on how this structure should be setup, but here is an initial proposal to discuss.

Domain Name

First, we need a domain name that we will use going forward in our public, external communications. This is open for discussion.

Proposed Name Reason why yes or no
splthorndale.com This seems to be the most inclusive
stpaulthorndale.com
saintpaulthorndale.com
There is often confusion with these, there is confusion whether it is st or saint
splcthorndale.com
splsthorndale.com
Using one of these would leave out either the (C)hurch or the (S)chool
splcs* Not a commonly used acronym

Based on the table above, the go-forward domain name that makes the most sense seems to be splthorndale.com.

SSL (HTTPS) Certificate

Right now the existing websites are not behind https://, we should consider hosting the site behind a secure https:// with an SSL certificate.

Paths

Once users access the new domain name, it makes sense to have clear paths as to the desired function, including (but not limited to):

NOTE: These are just ideas, not all of these may actually exist yet.

One idea is to have one site with sub paths, such as:

Depending on the website hosting solution, this will be a consideration that is currently open for discussion.

Next Steps

Consideration

I just thought... all of the official email addresses for Faculty/Staff are @stpaulthorndale.com, so unless we change this, the go-forward name of the new Church/School site may need to be stpaulthorndale.com to be consistent.

Users of our site will most likely have browser "favorites" or "bookmarks" to paths on our old site. We should use URL Redirects to minimize the amount of these bookmarks that would break once we switch over. That way, when someone clicks their bookmark, it should go to our new live site to the correct path.

The table below is an attempt to list some of the more important links and a proposal for the new, redirected location. A :white_check_mark: indicates the path maps 1-to-1, so no redirects are necessary.
