I don't necessarily view this as the actual implementation, but a gateway to discuss how to best accomplish the goal of converting types as I've done here.

As this PR is almost 2 years old, I've lost most context. @igorpeshansky do you feel that this change is still relevant / necessary, or can we abandon?
