Investigate Ownership Right to Print-on-Demand #73

We want to add the ability to "Printify" a work after it's been purchased. Much like you can view work in our compiled and generated product hosted on Azure, having the ability to print the digital work on a physical medium that is shipped to you will be a nice big button on the StarVault™ Collection Item details page.

I personally have resisted this idea because there seems to be a disconnect between having something physical paired with something digital (that can later be sold and transferred out of possession).

However, the idea of "unlocking" the right to something is sort of appealing to me and that wins the battle here.

The other point of hesitation is PII. We do not store anything like this currently and doing so would put us more at risk for an attack as there would be more data to collect upon a successful breach. However, it was recently pointed out to me that (duh) we use PayPal and that is exactly what this sort of activity is used for.

The idea is to "keep it simple" and leverage as much existing tech as possible. For instance, the first version of this should use PayPal exclusively and pull/store any shipping information there. We do not want to store any PII on our servers. We essentially want to be a broker of information. Between PayPal and the shipping provider.

Finally "Printify" is indeed the name of a company but it is unclear if we will actually use them. I am using the term here because it sounds like exactly what it is we want to do. 👍

Do you imagine Printify button under Details and Launch?

I see it on the collection details page (so, pressing Details on one of the above), before the Resell button. 👍

I could be talked into this. :D Keep in mind, though that we are going to need a way to get to the order after it is created. Do we show that here or is that in another section? 🤔

Actually, we could make that button take you to that section 😁

Maybe add printify feature here?

Those are generated one time when the license is created. The HTML is static and hosted out of a storage container in Azure. Modifying those would mean going through each and every product and updating accordingly. When I originally designed this I wanted it to be captured in time and not have it be updatable. The Blockchain is immutable and I was really captivated with this notion when using it as a point of reference while building starbeam.one. Not so much now. :)

But in any case, this is the digital product and is off-limits for this reason.

We won't update each product, so we put the button inside the platform :)

I have been looking into this and Printify's customer support is really questionable. They took 2 weeks to reply to me and forwarded me to their API page which is like ... duh? 🤦‍♂️ If we implement their catalog there is not drag-and-drop functionality and it will be all custom dev, with questionable support behind it. Because of this, I have pegged down the priority to this a couple notches.

Sure. This feature would be handy for a big business. But we are offering as much as it's reasonable :)

Want to get posters in there too: https://discord.com/channels/1017361648509517894/1094941131592179793/1102805008740778014

I did contact Displate at one time but never heard back from them 🤷‍♂️ https://displate.com/?

I think we should investigate this for Beta I (October 3rd). Instead of printing EVERYTHING we make the first version stickers + posters only. 🤔

greenbrook commented 1 year ago

I love the idea with the stickers. They are accessible. I would've wanted to get one if I was in the US.

This looks promising: https://stickersandposters.com/on-demand/
