Is Starfish suitable for low-resolution spectra? #128

Hi there,

I was wondering if you have any recommendations/suggestions about using Starfish on low-resolution (R ~ 1000 - 10000) slit spectra (e.g., from Gemini/FLAMINGOS2 or GNIRS).

Thanks!

thanks for your interest!

Yes, Starfish is a very flexible framework and can work on low-R spectra (as long as you have enough S/N for robust parameter inference), though the R of 1000-10000 as you mentioned sounds moderate-R to me - I'm using Starfish for IRTF/SpeX prism-mode spectra (R~100) and quick examples can be found in page 26-31 of Mark Marley's CoolStars20 slides.

Detailed documentation:

  1. the original Czekala et al. (2015)
  2. Starfish documentation
  3. application of the Starfish framework by Gully-Santiago et al. (2017)
  4. GitHub Issues

hope these help, ZJ
