Per the manual, each profession has different ship capabilities AND crew modifiers. Verify that these align with the sources as I believe there are some discrepancies.
If the game shifts toward an RPG then this would be needed anyway. The ship's systems should not be disabled if no crew member is assigned. Instead, the captain (player character) has base skills that apply to all bridge stations and crew (companions) add to the captain's skill.
