Request for private location tracking #107

Hi,

Many of us do sport in remote areas and wish to be tracked by our safety number. In the past I have used "beacon" type apps on an iPhone, or even location sharing from the mobile OS itself. I have been after a private solution for sometime however. Apps such as OSMand provide a service where they upload a lat and long to a website, perhaps that could be integrated in the web hosting part of your project when it becomes available?

This is low priority I know!

I am thinking skiing, windsurfing etc although commercially this may also apply to those who work in remote areas only want to be tracked by a select few.

If this is the wrong place to make this request then I will remove/move.

Thanks!

Love what you are doing.

Is the expectation that you would have internet access in these remote areas?

NyamiDev commented 3 years ago

Hi dr-bonez. Apologies for replying to this so late. The answer to the question is yes in say about 2/3 of the cases, in others when then no internet access. So the tool would need to enable the caching of location points over time, so when you do get a connection, it can upload the backlog. Its based on using mobile phones for the connection, perhaps when we Starlink etc the problem wont be as big.

What apps do you typically use for this kind of thing?

Hi Proff of Keags,

I run GraphenOS using an app called "Phone Tracker" found on F-Droid. This app can upload the location data at specified intervals to web server for example. However, more practically, others that would wish to use this would probably want it integrated with Strava, Cyclemeter, Garmin Tracker for example. What I really want is a repository/database hosted on the Embassy that I could send my location to at regular intervals. This database would then be able to be published as a web page, using Embassy, clearnet and TOR. Something I want to work on myself but not much spare time....

Understand this is low priority but private lcoation tracking could be a good area to work on when you are able, a little bit like secure home monitoring, door cameras, alarms etc. Could generate income for events that wish to track participants, but without sharing that info with corporates etc. Mine is personal use but you could monetise this potentially?

Thank you for a great product, great podcast appearances by you and Matt and all you do. You guys fucking rock.
