Investigate Disappearing Text in JupyterLab Terminals #588

Description of Bug

Reposting message from Stan Hatko:

The AAW bug with the terminal screen text disappearing and reappearing has restarted today. Here is an example screenshot (this notebook server started with a light theme except the usual dark theme, not sure why, but I don't think that had an impact as other notebook servers with the dark theme have the same issue). You can see the cursor at the bottom, a few seconds later the text reappeared on the screen.

It doesn't seem to affect the stability of things running on the server, but it's still very annoying and distracting for text in terminals to suddenly vanish for a few seconds.

Yesterday this bug wasn't common, but today it's occurring often for me. Sometimes when I switch to a terminal window it appears plain white with a small sad face icon on the top left (if I get a screenshot of this I will post it). It's occurring for me both on servers without load and servers under load.

In addition, when the screen goes blank, if the cursor is moved around (using the arrow keys) the character directly under the cursor is shown, with it being the only character visible. An example is in this screenshot, in which the cursor is over the / character: image
