Avoid using exec #2

You appear to be using exec quite a lot, but it is really not to be used often. I would suggest searching for all the places you use exec and just rewriting those sections without exec.

Note that if an issue recommends a code change, it is good form to include a link to the commit that includes the code change when you close the issue. If you just paste the hash (25a433d3bb7adddcdbece66ae252e4b4df2b5c99) it will become linked.
